Most people think of fate as something that happens to them, beyond their control. When the same problem keeps returning, they blame bad luck, the wrong people, or bad timing.

Yet many of these repetitions involve our own habits. We find ourselves behaving in the same way with different people and in different circumstances.

The birth chart does not cause these patterns. It reflects the tendencies we bring into life and the qualities we need to develop.

The Lunar Nodes and the Direction of Growth

It is a mistake to think of one lunar node as good and the other as bad.

The South Node describes qualities we use easily and habits we know well. They are useful, but relying on them for everything can hold us back. The North Node describes qualities we have yet to develop, which may feel awkward or unfamiliar at first.

We often feel safe with the behaviour described by the South Node because we know how to use it. That familiarity can also make it difficult to try something else.

Moving towards the North Node does not mean discarding who we are. It means putting what we already know to use in a way that allows us to grow.

Saturn and the Work of Change

While the lunar nodes describe a direction of growth, Saturn shows where that growth calls for patience, effort, and responsibility.

Wanting to change is not enough. If we avoid the work involved, we may keep encountering the same difficulty in different forms.

This need not be understood as punishment. If someone struggles to make progress because they leave everything unfinished, the useful question is how they can learn to finish what they start. Blaming Saturn does not help them do that.

The same applies to relationships. If similar problems recur with different partners, looking only at the other person’s chart will tell us very little about our part in the pattern. We also need to examine our own choices and responses. Changing them does not give us control over another person, but it can change how we take part in the relationship.

Saturn Returns

Saturn returns to its position in the birth chart about every twenty-nine and a half years. The first Saturn return usually falls in our late twenties, and the second in our late fifties.

In a chart reading, I approach these periods as times to examine the life a person has built: their work, marriage, family commitments, and relationship with themselves. What can they sustain? What are they continuing simply because they have become used to it?

A Saturn return does not mean something bad must happen. That assumption turns astrology into a source of fear.

Some people marry during this period; others divorce. Some leave a job they have held for years; others settle into a lasting career. The events differ. What matters in the reading is whether the person’s way of living supports their development, and what may need to change.

Putting Understanding into Practice

Esoteric teachings often describe human development as a gradual process. In that understanding, acquiring knowledge is only part of the work. We also have to learn to live what we know.

We may understand the need for patience and still struggle to wait. We may know we need boundaries and still make the same concessions. Recognising a habit does not immediately free us from it.

This is how I read Saturn alongside the lunar nodes: the nodes describe what we need to develop, while Saturn describes the sustained effort that development requires. Neither causes our behaviour. Both help us see it more clearly.

That is why I do not consider “What will happen to me?” the most useful question to bring to a birth chart reading. I would rather begin with what keeps happening, how the person responds, and what they could do differently.

Our birth chart is a mirror, not a fixed sentence. But if we refuse to change our habits, much of what we call fate will continue to look familiar.

I’d like to share a reply I just posted on Twitter, because this is something I care about. Someone described wanting a session that would “dig deep, with plenty of analysis.” Here is what I wrote:

The kind of in-depth birth chart reading you are looking for requires someone who combines astrological knowledge with a practical understanding of psychology, is familiar with the unconscious, and can understand the psychological symbols in your dreams.

People who get lost in astrological details cannot offer that kind of session. You need a conversation that helps you understand your fear of intimacy and recognise the ways you unconsciously sabotage yourself. You need someone who can hold up a clear mirror.

The unconscious can influence even what you choose to wear to a date or a job interview. Without your awareness, it can make you come across as more or less appealing.

There are many more examples, but the point is this: you need someone who can understand your unconscious and keep up with your intelligence. That is not something you find everywhere.

Ascendant is the sign which the eastern horizon passes through at anytime and anywhere around the world.

The zodiac which is a virtual belt consisting of 12 signs is a fictive belt around the world. The world spins in its orbit in this virtual belt in 24 hours. So the eastern horizon changes sign every two hours.

It is important to know your birth time within this correct two hour period. When you know this correct span of two hour duration, your birth chart becomes readable.

This is so because the birth time, thus the ascendant indicates which sign will correspond to your 1. house. All 11 houses will follow this one respectively, sign by sign.

The correct and decent way to look at a birth chart is to look at it using the whole sign system. Therefore, it is sufficient to know your birth time within the correct two hours span of time.

When someone’s birth time is unknown, looking at the timing of major events in their life can often be misleading.

Looking at the areas of life in which those events occurred offers a more reliable approach. This is because the houses divide the chart by subject, not by time. Our purpose in finding the birth time is to identify those areas of life.

The aim is to establish which sign corresponds to the first house of the chart. This means identifying a roughly two-hour window. Once your birth time is known within the window that gives you the correct rising sign, your birth chart can be read.

You are not the way you are because of your birth chart. Your birth chart is the way it is because of who you are.

Your birth chart is not the cause of who you are; it is your mirror. This means that the scenarios reflected in your chart are not a destiny carved in stone. If you are willing to change yourself, you can move beyond many of the patterns your chart describes. But if you close yourself off to anything new and refuse to change, your chart becomes your destiny.

This simple idea matters deeply, yet it can be difficult to grasp and put into practice. Nothing in my birth chart reading sessions is more important than this.

What astrology can tell you about what you need to do matters more than what it can tell you about the future. This is what I give priority to in my birth chart reading sessions.

Your birth chart describes the events, themes, and people you will encounter throughout your life. Reading the chart can help you understand why someone has come into your life and how you might respond to them.

If you repeatedly encounter people who bring similar problems into your working life, your birth chart can help you understand why this pattern keeps appearing and what you need to change within yourself. Once you understand this and make the necessary change, either their behaviour changes or they move out of your life.

The same applies to your relationships and marriage. There is a reason you keep encountering certain kinds of people with certain characteristics. When you understand that reason and see how you need to change, life becomes easier.

Astrology is not the cause of what we experience; it tells the story. People do not have a zodiac sign; they have a birth chart. And astrology is about more than astrology alone.
